We have been given a lot of room today to flex our creative muscles. We were prompted to fill out an “’Almanac Questionnaire’ which solicits concrete details about a specific place (real or imagined). Then write a poem incorporating or based on one or more of your answers.”
There are over twenty questions so I now have a grab bag of ideas in my journal from which to draw for future poems. But for today…..
An Urban Sketch: From My Front Porch
When it gets too hot and close inside,
I park myself on my front porch,
a concrete slab where
crickets crawl from the cracks
and sing their evening love ballads.
Across the street, a stucco blockhouse squats
on the corner and obscures my view–
except my view would be of a refinery —
which is not so great to look at in the day
but is something to behold at night.
Surf boards and wetsuits wait on a rail.
A coyote lopes down the street
averting its eyes from mine.
